I. Overview of my study abroad experience

Hello, my name is Xinran Zhang. In September 2018, I came to France to attend high school and graduated with about 17 out of 20 points and a Mention Très Bien. The years spent in high school gave me a solid foundation in both language and academics.

After high school, I entered Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University to major in Management (Gestion). In a diverse classroom environment, I gradually developed a strong interest in the field of finance. In addition to theory, the curriculum includes many group projects and case studies, constantly pushing me out of my comfort zone.

I am currently in my second year of the master’s program in Finance and Asset Management (Finance et Asset Management) at Sorbonne University. From bachelor’s to master’s, the city and the university have stayed the same, but at each stage I have found new courage and new goals.

II. What I gained from studying in France

These eight years in France have been an extremely valuable journey of growth for me. They have taught me to face challenges in life calmly, and helped me become more independent, patient, steady and fulfilled.

In France, I met friends from all over the world and was exposed to many different cultural perspectives. During school breaks, I would plan short trips to experience the art and history of France, and also learn to adjust my pace so that study and life remain in balance.

Of course, life is not always easy — difficulties and setbacks are inevitable. Yet it is exactly these experiences that have shaped the stronger, more confident person I am today, and they allow me to face an uncertain future with more ease.

III. Advice for future students

First, do not be afraid of making mistakes. Whether in language or academics, mistakes are part of the learning process. Most French classmates are friendly and willing to help, as long as you are willing to speak up and take the initiative to communicate.

Second, the study pace in France relies heavily on self-management. Without parents and teachers constantly reminding you, everything needs to be handled by yourself. You need to adapt actively, think independently and take action on your own.

Studying abroad will show you how diverse the world is — there are both glamorous moments and real challenges that require adaptation. Sometimes you may feel homesick or lonely, but these experiences are all part of growing up. So before you leave, it is important to clarify your goals and motivations, and understand why you are choosing France.

IV. Closing thoughts

Studying in France is a journey full of both challenges and pleasant surprises. It brings confusion at times, but also many rewards. To those of you who are about to set off, I would like to say: may you walk each step with courage and clarity, and find your own light in a new country.

No matter whether you are still preparing, in the middle of your application or already abroad, please believe that every decision you make will open up new possibilities. I hope that my experience can help you move forward with a bit more confidence.
