Effective from the 2025–2026 school year

Anticipated math exam in Première (Épreuve anticipée de mathématiques)

Starting with students entering Première in 2025, mathematics joins French as an early BAC component. The score (coefficient 2) counts toward the overall BAC average and is uploaded to Parcoursup.

Key parameters

  • Eligibility: All Première students in general and technological tracks.
  • Exam period: June each year starting with the 2026 cohort.
  • Format: 4-hour written paper (two 2-hour parts), calculators prohibited; 20 points, coefficient 2.
  • Goal: Benchmark core skills, automated calculations, and modeling abilities.

Exam structure

  • Partie A: Automated calculation + MCQs (6 points), checks basic operations and concept recognition.
  • Partie B: 2–3 independent exercises (14 points), tests modeling, reasoning, and written work.
  • Calculators are not allowed, emphasizing manual work and logical steps.

Syllabus basis

  • General track: If math is selected as a specialty, questions follow the Première math specialty syllabus; if not, they follow the science education math components.
  • Technological track: Based on the common math curriculum.

How the score is used

  • Counts toward the final BAC score (coefficient 2).
  • Published in July and synced to Parcoursup, informing universities about math readiness.
  • Provides a national benchmark to compare students across schools.

What is assessed? Officially highlighted competencies

Core abilities: Solving equations, ratio calculations, probability and statistics, and fundamental properties of functions and sequences.

Automated skills: Accurate, quick algebraic operations and reasoning steps.

Modeling and interpretation: Describing real-world contexts with mathematical language and explaining statistical indicators.

Guiding Families

  • Track fluency in “manual calculation + written reasoning.”
  • Use past papers or school mock tests to simulate a 2-hour no-calculator session.
  • Confirm with teachers which exam version applies (specialty syllabus vs. common course).
