Anticipated French exam in Première (Épreuves anticipées de français)

All Première students take the written and oral French exams in June. Together they carry coefficient 5 + 5, serving as a core indicator of language and literature strength on Parcoursup.

Core facts

  • Who takes it: All Première students in general and technological high schools.
  • Exam format: National written + oral tests, total coefficient 10.
  • How it is used: Counts toward the final BAC average and is uploaded to Parcoursup.

Written exam (Écrit)

  • Duration: 4 hours, 20 points.
  • Format: Choose between a commentary (commentaire) or an essay (dissertation).
  • Content:
    • Commentary: Analyze a literary text outside the textbook, testing comprehension and rhetorical analysis.
    • Essay: Build an argument around the set works and “learning pathways,” citing class texts and personal reading.
  • Preparation focus: Organizing materials, precise language, and argument structure.

Oral exam (Oral)

  • Flow: 30 minutes of preparation + 20 minutes of defense.
  • Structure:
    • Part 1 (≈12 minutes): Using a teacher-provided reading list (≥5 texts per theme), the examiner draws a text and excerpt. Students present and may answer grammar questions.
    • Part 2 (≈8 minutes): Students present a self-selected work and discuss perspectives with the examiner.
  • Skills expected: Accurate language, literary knowledge, logical thinking, and on-the-spot expression.

Objectives & what families should watch

What is tested: Language accuracy, reading analysis, literary culture, and multi-angle thinking.

Why it matters: Scores feed the BAC average and directly influence Parcoursup evaluations of language ability.

Everyday preparation: Know the set texts, complete recommended readings, and gather quotable lines.

Guiding Families

  • Create “text cards” together, marking themes, characters, and key quotes.
  • Ask students to summarize in Chinese then retell in French to ensure comprehension.
  • Schedule a mock oral in March–April to practice the 30 + 20 minute rhythm.
